How to add the on-trend colour with accessories

Sunny, bright, rich and energetic: the Dulux Colour of the Year 2025 is True Joy. The shade, reminiscent of the most golden egg yolk or the classic pot of Coleman’s English mustard, is not for the faint hearted but it has been chosen for its ability to add joy to the smallest of spaces.

The good news is you don’t have to paint every wall yellow to feel the benefits. Furniture and accessories are the way forward, especially if you’re a tenant who can’t make major changes to where you live. The High Street has quickly caught on to the trend for True Joy, with homeware aisles and department stores full of golden accessories that can be added to an existing interior. Here are some of our favourites.

    Brighten your bathroom

Bring a burst of sunshine into an otherwise plain bathroom with some yellow accessories. M and S has come up trumps with its dark ochre coloured towels, a close match for True Joy. There are four sizes of towel to choose from, as well as a face cloth. Fold them neatly and stack them high! Add this bamboo leaf bath mat in a matching colour for maximum cheer.

    Make it a sunny seat

Supercharging your seating is an excellent way of injecting colour into the home. Habitat is definitely a fan of mellow yellow, with some superb options. The Celine velvet accent chair in mustard would look fabulous in a bedroom, while the Julien sofa in yellow is an equal mix of sunshine and squishy softness. If you have a kitchen island, the Jerry counter bar stools in mustard will create a colour focal point.

    Add cushions for colour

A neutrally-coloured sofa can be lifted from the lacklustre by adding some yellow cushions. John Lewis has an extensive collection that follows the golden notes of True Joy. Add pattern with the diamond embroidery cushion with its geometric design, add texture with the jumbo cord cushion in mustard and add a touch of luxury with the cotton velvet cushion in gold.

    Small yet mighty

Decorative accessories are a quick way of following the True Joy fashion and Asda should be your first stop for affordable homewares you can add to your weekly shop. The Furn knot velvet door stop in ochre is plush and practical, while these yellow beaded photo frames, available in two sizes, make a cheery impact when clustered together on a sideboard or mantelpiece.

    Colour, scent, light

If you’re looking for more than a pop of colour, opt for yellow objects that have a dual purpose. This set of six twisted pillar candles in yellow will deliver a soft glow and a dash of True Joy wherever they’re placed. Or lift your mood with scent as well as colour with this lemon and yuzu fragranced room diffuser, which comes complete with a ceramic mini vase to hold the reeds. Both items are available from Dunelm.

Read all about it: this is how to decorate with books

Despite our love of all things digital, homes still proudly bear cases, shelves and bedside tables groaning with the weight of books. In fact NIQ figures showed 116 million books were sold in the UK during 2024.
